Introduction

Meeting Lisa

In 2007, when I was in my early thirties, my father suddenly passed away, and I unexpectedly found myself taking over his company. For nearly ten years, my father had invested in an innovative digital technology that was far ahead of its time. He believed it would one day transform the way people experienced knowledge and culture. However, this technology truly belonged to a future where the internet, tablets, and smartphones would become part of everyday life. At that time, the world simply wasn’t ready for it.Many times, I considered giving up. Continuing to invest in the company was financially difficult, but as long as I could, I couldn’t bring myself to abandon my father’s dream.
Deep in my heart, I had another dream of my own. I wanted to use this technology to create digital museums and digital archives that could preserve art, history, and education for future generations. I hoped that one day I could make this dream come true in Europe.
The problem was that I had absolutely no connections there. Then, something unexpected happened.
One day, a person I had just met looked at me and simply said,
“You should go to Italy.”
Those words changed the course of my life.Soon afterward, I met Mr. Gunji, who was living in Milan. I shared my dream with him. After listening carefully, he said,“There is someone very special I’d like you to meet. She’s constantly traveling around the world, so I’m not even sure she’s in Milan today—but let me call her.”That person was Lisa.To my surprise, she immediately drove to the café where we were waiting. As she stepped out of her car, I noticed that she had left her dog inside. I smiled to myself, thinking, She must really love dogs.A few minutes later, Mr. Gunji excused himself, leaving Lisa and me alone.
It was our very first meeting.I didn’t know what to say.The only thing I knew was that we both loved dogs.So I showed her a photograph of my own dog.
Suddenly, Lisa began to cry.I was completely surprised. All I had done was show her a picture of my dog. Then she explained why.Only a short time before, she had lost her beloved Italian Greyhound, Hermes. My dog was the same breed and almost exactly the same color. At that moment, two women from opposite sides of the world discovered an unexpected bond.Japan and Italy.

Two completely different lives.Yet we were connected by our love for the same beautiful animal. From that moment, our friendship began.Later, I told Lisa about the technology my father had left behind.“My dream is to create a digital museum using this digital archive technology.”

To my surprise, it was exactly the kind of technology she had been searching for.Soon I found myself staying in Lisa’s home, carrying my DSLR camera everywhere as we began documenting her life’s work.Every room was filled with extraordinary treasures—paintings, sculptures, photographs, family antiques, personal documents, sketches, and even drawings her mother had made on café paper napkins.Day after day, we carefully photographed and archived every piece.
I often wonder how many thousands of photographs we took.Together, we uncovered an entire lifetime of creativity and preserved it for future generations.
That was how the Digital Museum was born.

Nineteen years passed. This year, I returned to Italy with my nine-year-old son to visit Lisa once again.
When we reunited, I found that she had endured a heartbreaking tragedy.
Many of the artworks she had dedicated her life to creating had been stolen during a robbery.
Yet despite everything she had lost, Lisa remained remarkably strong.
She asked me only one thing.
“If you still have any old photographs or digital files—even family pictures or pictures of my home—please help me find them.”
I searched everywhere.
At first, I couldn’t find anything.
Finally, I asked one of the staff members who had worked with me since those early days to search our old company servers one more time.
Then, something extraordinary happened.
Every single file we had created nineteen years earlier was still there.

It felt nothing short of a miracle.
The digital book technology that once seemed revolutionary has now become ordinary and has long since disappeared.
But the memories, the designs, the photographs, and the stories remain timeless.
That is why I decided to restore the original Digital Museum as faithfully as possible and bring it back online.
This website is far more than a digital archive. It is a record of friendship.
A record of dreams.A record of preserving art and history for future generations.

Today, inspired by those experiences, I lead Global Leadership Education (GLE), an educational program that connects world-class artists with students and schools around the world.Looking back, I realize that everything began in that small café in Milan.

My father’s dream.A shared love for an Italian Greyhound. And one unforgettable meeting with Lisa. When I told Lisa that I was rebuilding the Digital Museum, she sent me this message:
“I truly believe that God and the energy of the universe are helping me recover through you.”
She also wrote:“The website you created for me was more than a website. It was a beautiful record of my creative journey, my beloved Lakis, and the people who have shared this path with me.”And then she gave me words I will treasure forever:
“You have preserved a precious part of my life and my work. To me, you are truly an angel.”
Nineteen years have passed, but Lisa has never changed.
Despite losing so much, she continues to move forward with grace, courage, and hope.
She still dreams. She still creates. She still inspires everyone around her.
For me, that is her greatest masterpiece.I hope this Digital Museum will preserve not only Lisa’s extraordinary works of art, but also her indomitable spirit for generations to come.
